Thou Shalt NOT Read This (it’s about the Satanic Temple, again!)

According to some, the Ten Commandments are the “Foundation of Western Civilization.”  Even when I was a Protestant Minister I thought that was bizarre.  It’s nonsense to say that an ancient exclusive, tribal list of Shalts and Shalt Nots has anything much to do with our modern systems of law, culture, government, community or personal ethics. “Our God is the only God” and He demands you Believe and Be Nice!  I don’t find that convincing or impressive.

Why wouldn’t the Lord of the Universe simply Boom Out of the Sky:

“Be Good, Please!”

Well, then along comes the Bad Boy of Belief Systems, The Satanic Temple (of course it’s kinda made-up and meant to be scary. . .in a pleasant way).

Compare their “tenets” to the ancient “commands.”

Damn!  I have to vote for the ST yet again!

This reminds me why I’m a Happy Secular.

Satanic Temple tenets

Seven Fundamental Tenets

1. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.
2. The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
3. One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
4. The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo your own.
5. Beliefs should conform to our best scientific understanding of the world. We should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit our beliefs.
6. People are fallible. If we make a mistake, we should do our best to rectify it and resolve any harm that may have been caused.
7. Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word

Note that note at the bottom about their “mission”:

“To encourage benevolence and empathy among all people. . .we embrace practical common sense and justice.”

Amen. . .uhhh. . .ummmm

{Today’s Brainsticker:  remember who “invented” the devil/satan/the adversary.  We should be careful what we invent. . .it may come back to bite us in the butt of our beliefs!}

  1. Anton LeVey ripping off Alister Crowley? When I read the Satantic Bible in the 1990s, I thought it was a lot more cohesive and consistent than the committee written and re-written bible, but since it also depends on a deity, and is within the Abrahamic Trilogy of Jewish/Christian and Islam, it’s part and parcel of the same bad idea – that there an afterlife and what one does with their genitals determines that.
